The Soviet Magnum: The MAZ 5445

The Soviet Magnum: The MAZ 5445

As is well known, strict secrecy reigned behind the borders of the former Soviet Union (USSR). The truck manufacturing industry was no exception to this rule. The *MAZ 5445* truck is a perfect example: no more than three or four photos of this vehicle can be found, and the information available about it is extremely limited.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the funding for this project stopped almost completely. Despite this, the MAZ company pushed forward with determination. Consequently, in 1993, they showcased this prototype, which remains the only unit ever manufactured.

The vehicle was fully prepared for mass production and succeeded in drawing high attention at exhibitions. However, it never made it to the market. The official reason behind this was its *excessive price*. MAZ estimated that the 5445 would be nearly 50% more expensive than their main, standard production models, the 5422 and 6422. While this placed it in a price range comparable to European trucks, its technical capabilities were not advanced enough to match them.

Technical Specifications:

Engine:- Belarusian-made TMZ 8431 (Turbocharged and Intercooled V8)

 Displacement:- 14.8 liters

 Power:- 380 horsepower (hp)

 Transmission:- Belarusian-made

The most unique feature of this truck was its *cab*. Made of fiberglass, it was taller than France's Renault Magnum and featured a completely flat floor. This design created significantly more room inside the vehicle (unfortunately, no photos of the interior have survived). Furthermore, because the access steps were positioned even further forward than the front wheels, the truck featured a relatively shorter wheelbase.

However, the 5445 did not disappear entirely. In 2001, it resurfaced at the "Autoexotics 2001" exhibition in Moscow, but its cab had been completely modified. The Russian company "Car-Systems" had purchased the prototype and fitted it with a much cheaper, low-roof standard production cab (which, to be honest, was far less attractive than the original design). Photos of this version are shared in the comments section.

đŸ’Ŧ What do you think about this fascinating truck? Do you think MAZ would have faced legal issues from Renault due to the striking similarities? Would you have liked to own a vehicle like this? Comment your thoughts below!

The King of the Highway: Mercedes-Benz Actros MP3

When truck enthusiasts and transport professionals talk about "perfection in engineering," the Mercedes-Benz Actros MP3 (2008–2012) is often at the top of the list. It wasn’t just a facelift; it was a revolution that solidified the Actros name as a global leader in heavy-duty haulage.

What Makes the MP3 Legendary?

The MP3 brought a level of sophistication to the cockpit and the road that set the standard for the next decade.
  • The Powerhouse Engines: Reliable performance was guaranteed with the OM 541 V6 and the massive OM 542 V8. These engines were built to withstand the toughest conditions while maintaining impressive fuel efficiency for their time.

  • PowerShift 2 Evolution:
The MP3 introduced the refined 12-speed PowerShift 2 automated transmission. It delivered faster gear changes and smarter logic, making long-haul journeys smoother for the driver and more profitable for the owner.
Safety First: It was a pioneer in road safety, featuring the Active Brake Assist, lane-keeping sensors, and the debut of the standard battery status  indicator—small details that made a big difference                                                                                      on the road.

The Iconic Look: With its distinctive chrome-accented grille and reshaped Bi-Xenon headlamps, the MP3 still commands respect at every truck stop. It’s a design that feels modern even years later.

    The Driver’s Sanctuary

Mercedes-Benz understood that the cab is a driver’s second home. The MP3 introduced:

    Standard rain and light sensors.

The "MegaSpace" cab option with a completely flat floor.

Enhanced storage and high-quality materials designed for maximum comfort during rest periods.
    The Verdict

The Actros MP3 is more than just a truck—it’s a symbol of reliability and prestige. Whether you’re hauling heavy loads across borders or managing a fleet, the MP3 remains a benchmark for what a prime mover should be.

The Truck That Amazed the World: The 1964 Ford "Big Red"

The 1964 Ford "Big Red" is the truck that amazed the world. It was a massive experimental prototype powered by a 705-series gas turbine engine. Although it did not use a thrust-producing "jet engine," it utilized a turbine system—a technology commonly found in airplanes—to drive the wheels.

    Design and Power

Unveiled at the 1964 New York World's Fair, "Big Red" represented Ford's vision for the future of the American Interstate Highway System.

    • Engine: It was equipped with a 600-horsepower (600 hp) dual-cycle gas turbine engine (Model 705) developed in collaboration with the U.S. military.

    • Speed and Capacity: It was designed to pull two 40-foot trailers at a constant cruising speed of 112 kilometers per hour (112 km/h).

    • Exhaust: One of its most famous features was the top-mounted exhaust, which released odorless, non-toxic gases 13 feet above the traffic so as not to affect other drivers.

    Luxury and Features

Because Ford expected drivers to spend days on the road non-stop, the cab was essentially a "hotel on wheels."

    • Amenities: It included a refrigerator, a microwave oven (an amazing invention in 1964), a sink, and even a fold-away toilet.

    • Driver's Cabin: The driver sat in a command-style seat with a wrap-around windshield for maximum visibility, while the co-driver had the facility to watch television (for safety reasons, this was disabled when the truck was in motion).

    • Access: The doors were button-operated, and it featured an automatically extending ladder to help the driver climb up into the highly elevated cab.

    What Happened to It?

Despite its advanced engineering, "Big Red" never went into mass production.

    1. Fuel Consumption: Turbine engines are highly inefficient during stop-and-go driving and while idling.

    2. Regulations: Changing environmental and safety regulations made it difficult to certify this complex turbine system.

    3. Cost: Production and maintenance costs were significantly higher compared to traditional diesel engines.

Although the truck was thought to be lost or destroyed for decades, it was eventually rediscovered in a private collection and has since been restored to its original condition.

WHY THEY DISCONTINUED CAT ENGINES FOR INTERNATIONAL TRUCKS ?

Currently, International (Navistar) does not manufacture engines or trucks in collaboration with CAT (Caterpillar). However, there was a very close partnership between these two companies in the past. Here are some key facts about it:

    Past Collaboration

    • Use of CAT Engines for Older Models: Highly popular and powerful CAT engines were used to power many International trucks manufactured before 2010. Specifically, engines like the CAT C15, C13, and C9 are great examples of this.

    • Production of CAT Vocational Trucks: Between 2011 and 2016, CAT and Navistar (International) jointly introduced a line of heavy-duty vocational trucks to the market. The CAT CT660, CT680, and CT681 were the models in this lineup.

    • Manufacturing and Branding: Although these trucks were designed and manufactured by International, they were sold under the CAT brand name.

    • Rebranded Engines: The engines used in these trucks, such as the CT13, were actually International's MaxxForce engines rebranded under the CAT name

    • Reasons for Ending the Partnership

      • Emission Standards: Due to the technical and financial challenges of complying with the strict EPA emission standards introduced in the United States, CAT decided to completely stop manufacturing engines for on-highway trucks in 2010.

      • Market Exit: Later, in 2016, CAT completely withdrew from the on-highway truck market as well. With this move, their manufacturing agreement with International officially came to an end.

Therefore, no new International trucks manufactured today use CAT engines. Currently, they rely entirely on their own latest engines (like the S13 and A26 mentioned earlier) as well as Cummins engines.

    THE LEGENDARY FTF TRUCKS

Country of Origin: FTF (Floor Truck Fabriek) was a truck manufacturing company located in the Netherlands.

Usage: These were specifically designed for heavy-duty cargo transportation, and the vehicle shown in this image appears to be used for transporting heavy materials like bricks. The wording "HENDRIKS LOBITH" mentioned on the vehicle door likely refers to the name of the company and the city it belonged to.

    1. Engine & Power The most distinctive feature of FTF trucks is their engine. They mostly used American-made Detroit Diesel engines.

    • Specifically, their 'Two-stroke' diesel engines were very famous at the time, and these trucks stood out due to the unique roaring sound emitting from them.

    • In addition, Cummins engines were also used for some models.

    2. The Cab Instead of manufacturing their own cabins, the FTF company modified and used cabins from other companies.

    • The cabin in the picture you sent is one manufactured by the French company Berliet (later Renault).

    • They have also used cabins from the British 'Motor Panels' company for some vehicles.

    3. Transmission & Axles As they were manufactured specifically for heavy-duty work, they used very strong components:

    • Gearbox: Mostly Fuller (Manual) or Allison (Automatic) gear systems.

    • Axles: Rockwell or Kirkstall axles capable of carrying very heavy loads.

    4. Specialization Unlike regular lorries/trucks, these vehicles are custom-built specifically for heavy haulage transportation. They were widely used for port-related activities in the Netherlands and for transporting large machinery.

    5. Cessation of Production Around the year 1995, the FTF company completely stopped manufacturing trucks, and after that, they focused only on the production of trailers.
