Up to 700 km of electric range marks a new chapter in heavy-duty trucking

The future of heavy-duty trucking is becoming increasingly electric, and Volvo Trucks has just received one of the strongest confirmations yet.

Volvo Trucks’ full electric truck range has been named the International Truck of the Year 2027. The prestigious award recognizes Volvo’s latest generation of battery-electric heavy-duty trucks and their ability to cover a much wider range of transport applications than before.

The winning range includes the Volvo FH Electric, Volvo FM Electric, Volvo FMX Electric and Volvo FH Aero Electric. Together, these trucks are designed for applications ranging from regional and long-haul transport to city distribution, construction and utility operations.

Up to 700 km on a single charge

One of the biggest developments in Volvo’s new electric range is driving range.

The latest heavy-duty electric trucks can offer up to 700 km of range on a single charge, depending on factors such as vehicle configuration, total weight, weather, wind resistance and driving conditions.

This represents a major step forward compared with the early generation of electric heavy trucks, where limited range restricted them mainly to shorter routes and urban operations.

The extended-range Volvo FH Aero Electric is particularly important for long-distance applications, combining battery-electric propulsion with the aerodynamic advantages of the FH Aero cab.

What makes the 2027 award particularly significant is that Volvo did not win simply with a single model.

The International Truck of the Year jury recognized the entire electric portfolio.

This is not Volvo’s first International Truck of the Year success with an electric truck.

Volvo Trucks has now received the International Truck of the Year award eight times, with previous victories including the Volvo F7, F10, FL and FH models.

500 million kilometres of real-world experience

Volvo’s electric truck story is also supported by experience from vehicles already operating around the world.

According to Volvo Trucks, since 2019 its electric trucks have travelled approximately 500 million kilometres worldwide, with around 7,000 electric Volvo trucks in operation.

The company says nearly 2,000 customers in more than 50 countries currently use Volvo electric trucks in their daily operations.

That real-world experience is important because the transition to electric heavy transport is not only about battery capacity. Fleet operators also need reliable charging, predictable range, payload capability, uptime and service support.
